CHRISTIAN DEVOTIONAL -EMPATHY OR SYMPATHY

CHRISTIAN DEVOTIONAL

EMPATHY OR SYMPATHY

The way we act will make a difference.

IN a good way to understand the difference between sympathy and empathy, is to see the attitude and aptitude that the good Samaritan showed with that stranger who was lying on the ground: But a Samaritan who was traveling came to where the man was and, seeing him , took pity on him. He came over, dressed her wounds with wine and oil, and bandaged them. Then he mounted him on his own horse, took him to a lodging and took care of him. The next day, he took out two silver coins and gave them to the owner of the lodging. "Take care of me," he told her, "and whatever you spend more, I'll pay you back when I come back." I could criticise the actions of the Levite and the priest for leaving this stranger, but I will only say that, perhaps, they felt sympathy for that poor human being, but they did nothing to solve his life. However, the Good Samaritan, an archetype of Christ, demonstrated an empathy. That is to say, we can verify that this good man took as his own the problem that in this biblical version that says: Take care of me, what you spend more, I will pay you. How did the two of them know each other? Was he relatives to assume such responsibility? What was really in his heart to act this way?

“BLESS THOSE WHO PERSUE YOU; BLESS AND DO NOT CURSE.”

Romans 12.14

Let us pray together: God of glory and power, your example of love and dedication through your son Jesus Christ is our model to follow. For in our hearts to feel like doing everything just as Christ did.

There is a great question about the love of God, and it is: if God is all love, why is so much violence seen in some biblical texts? For some of them, I could, as a theologian, give clarification, for others, we must wait to be present before God and listen to his explanations, if he gives them to us. What is clear to me is that the interpretation that we theologians give to these biblical passages will show God in a loving way or in a way that radiates only violence. Honestly, in all these years, since I changed my way of interpreting the Bible, I can only see God's empathy for all human beings, for all humanity, just as we are reading in the recommendations of the Apostle Paul in his Gospel.

“REJOICE WITH THOSE WHO ARE JOYFUL; CRY WITH THOSE WHO CRY”

Romans 12.15

Let us pray together: my God, only the Mind of Christ acting in me can bring me closer to the stature of Christ. I beg you for the love of humanity, help me to feel the same empathy that you have for each one of us.

To know how to be at every moment in life, it is necessary to be a person with a good sense of empathy. Jesus Christ knew how to cry with Martha and Mary, he celebrated the holidays with great joy as in the weddings of Canaan. At the last supper, He drank wine with his friends and sang praises to God. In the same way, crying with someone who cries, laughing with someone who laughs, rejoicing at the right moment, is a demonstration of our empathy for the rest of humanity just as Jesus Christ did.

God bless you.
